Buddy of mine just recently bought his first Honda, so we decided to eventually just do a d16z6 mini-me. Eventually we'll be boosting this motor with a 70-100 shot of nitrous and aiming for at least 300 horsepower.
This build thread won't be tooo detailed, but it'll give a general sense of what we're up to.

This is what the car looked like when we got it
    d16z6/d15b7 mini-me eg hatchback Casey1

We did some things here and there under the hood; CAI, Header and downpipe, strut bar, random things like that.

We also decided to paint it black, because the blue looked pretty terrible.

The valve cover basically looked like shit. So we painted it red with some high heat paint.

Yesterday he went up to portland to pick up his d16z6 head and turbo along with a turbo manifold.

    We're still waiting on a few parts to get here;
water pump, timing belt, new gaskets, distributor, etc.
But we decided to start pulling everything apart tonight so we could get a head start on it for the weekend.

That's all we've got so far, I'll update tomorrow through Sunday, and hopefully if everything goes right I won't need to update after that because it'll be done!

Looking good so far. I like the car and am eager to see it's completion. Should be able to lay down some decent power with that setup. Keep us posted.

Well we got back to it first thing this morning

    Almost there!

    And she's done!!

By far one of the easiest motor "swaps" you can do, I wouldn't really call it a swap, switching heads is alot easier than a full swap, but either way, it was easy and only took us about a day.

Currently VTEC isn't hooked up, we're waiting for the new p28 ecu and wiring harness, so it's just running off the original p06.

I'll update with photos the ENTIRE process of hooking up the new ECU, wiring harness, and the process of wiring VTEC.
I'll also come back and update in the future when we throw the turbo and nitrous setup on.

Thanks for checkin out the project!

Seems my pictures were a little too big, next time I upload pictures I'll account for the right side cutoff. Also tomorrow I'll try to upload a video of the car running, I didn't think to take a video of it tonight.

Always had a soft spot for the EG6 hatch. Can't wait to see more.

Wow I totally forgot I posted this... HAH.
Ummm actually I think there are a few updates, I'll go over to his house after he gets off work tomorrow and take some photos.
I see that I said I'd do a full DIY for wiring vtec, and I obviously forgot that I said I would do that.. So I'll try to get that done too.
He's workin two jobs and saving money right now, just moved into a new place, so cash has been tight and nothing extreme has happened, but he picked up some new wheels and a few other little things I think.

So, i'm guessing that a motor with stock internals holds up well to boost? I need to get a 2nd gen Eclipse turbo head with manifold and turbo for my Eclipse... How hard was it to plumb the oil lines if you remember?

Well we haven't put the turbo on it yet, he's got too many court fees to buy the rest of the stuff he needs. Stock internals on this particular motor, assuming they're all in perfect shape, can handle 5-10 pounds of boost depending on the size of the turbo, and up to about 200hp. The motor stock runs 130hp.
We didn't have to run any new oil lines for the head swap, that's only neccesary on B series frankensteins.

ah. yeah court fees are a pain. in all honesty, i THINK a stock 4G64 block will handle MAYBE 12-15 lbs. of boost, seeing as how it's the same block as a 1995-99 GS, GS-T and GSX. So, I believe it's possible. I'll contact someone on the Eclipse forum and get more info.

Usually stock turbo chargers are rather small and on average run on 6 pounds of boost (sti and Evo and things like that) and they can handle more than that, that's just their stock setup.
So I don't doubt at all that it'd be able to handle something like that with absolutely no problems. But it'd be smart to upgrade internals with anything bigger than that, just for the sake of reliability.
Psi doesn't really mean anything (when talking about what a motor can handle), it really matters more what size of turbo you're using, and then the psi comes into play.

So a T3/4 turbo is a relatively small one? I think those can give as much as 400hp... Which is fine, I'm not looking for more than 350-400 now. I want to be able to keep all stock internals. Maybe beef up the gaskets and rings with a fresh engine rebuild. Once i get the 20B for the Eclipse and a 13B RX7 engine for Sarah's RX8 (more reliable) I'll get the lightweight rotors and what not.

A t3/t4 isn't necessarily that "small" it's actually ideal (considered large) for 4 banger setups, which is really the only thing I've done extensive research on. I'm sure straight 6 and v6, rotary, and everything else has different ideal sizing, due to turbo lag and how quickly the motor can spool the turbo. But if you threw a t3/t4 on my car, which I think is what I'm going to do, along with the parts that I've listed on the first page, and a few other things, and a good tune, I know I could make 350whp. I guess I won't go as far to say that it'd make 350 "easily" but that's just because I haven't been there, done that, yet. My buddies b18 ek hatch made 350whp on pump gas and stock type r cams, rods and pistons, ferrea valves, didn't sleeve the block and I forget what else. But it's definitely achievable.

Yeah it'd make it scoot that's for sure. The turbo in the pictures on the first page is just a t3. But it'll do Wink

yeah so this car is history...
He sold it because he got an sr22 from driving without insurance, and his insurance was gonna go up to $213 bucks a month, which was some horseshit he wasn't even about to deal with. So he bought an old Ford Ranger and pays $76 a month for insurance on it lol.
But he just bought a 93 prelude that has a jdm h22a in it from some guy that was trying to part out the car but had to have it moved out of his old houses driveway or his landlord was gonna tow it.
He waited until the last day and went up to the guy with 190 bucks and walked away with the title. So that's pretty cool, we're just gonna pull the motor and scrap the shell for 200 bucks. So basically we got a jdm h22a, that runs, and 10 bucks. Just for towing a car.
The turbo that he was gonna throw on the hatch is mine now and will probably be the first turbo I put on my s2k.

SR22? Never had one, but almost did on my birthday this past monday (8/13/12) The missus and i went down to cassville to meet with my lawyer, and since we were there and our insurance agent is there, we stopped in to get a replacement card. Turns out that they had cancled my policy due to a returned check just after we moved to Springfield, when finances were shot to hell from deposits and crap. the car hasn't had insurance since May. I've been driving it since June 23. but congrats on the JDM find. Wish i could find a JDM 4G63t. i'll get one eventually. lol too bad about the hatch though.
